SCIAF is the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund
SCIAF helps people of all religious backgrounds and none, and is supported by the generosity of the Scottish public and institutional donors.
SCIAF was set up in 1965 with funds of just £8,000.
In its first 40 years SCIAF has raised over £65 million to help those in need.
The total income raised by SCIAF in 2007 was over £5.9 million. Over £6.1 million was spent on charitable activities over the same period.
SCIAF works in over 20 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, supporting over 80 long term projects.
SCIAF helps those affected by conflict, hunger, disabilities, HIV/AIDS, a lack of healthcare and education.
In 2007 SCIAF opened its first overseas office in Juba, Southern Sudan. SCIAF also shares an office with its sister agencies CAFOD (England & Wales) and Trocaire (Ireland) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Thousands of people across Scotland supported SCIAF’s Lenten WEE BOX BIG Change campaign in 2007 and raised a record £870,000. In addition the campaign won the ‘Best Campaign’ award from the Institute of Fundraising Scotland.
SCIAF speaks out for an end to poverty and injustice. Thousands of SCIAF campaigners successfully urged copper mining companies to give the Zambian government a fairer share of the income from its most precious natural resource.
SCIAF’s Chief Executive joined an international delegation of Cardinals, Bishops and Archbishops in 2007 to lobby world leaders on ‘Making Aid Work’, ahead of G8 summit in Rostock, Germany.
SCIAF visits 200 schools across Scotland annually - speaking directly to over 30,000 young people.
