In September 2008, SCIAF published an essential report on the shocking scale of sexual violence against women and girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
An urgent campaign action was launched alongside the report with a sold out premiere screening of the documentary “The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo.”
The campaign called on the UK Department for International Development (DFID) to increase its funding to reflect levels of need in the country, and to target its spending more effectively to ensure that survivors received the help and care they needed, as well as an end to impunity for the perpetrators.
Thousands of people across Scotland wrote to the Secretary of State for International Development, while SCIAF staff met with DFID officials in both Scotland and DR Congo to urge them to take action.
Thanks to you, this issue has now moved further into the spotlight, ensuring that the women and girls of the DRC are not forgotten.
Our work on sexual violence in the DR Congo continues, and we will keep you updated on new developments, or any further opportunities to take action.
