People living in poverty across the world are the most vulnerable to the devastating effects of climate change. We are highlighting how changes in the climate are undermining people’s efforts to work their way out of poverty and causing ever more frequent and severe natural disasters.
Valeriano, a farmer in El Salvador, told us:
“Climate change in this country makes things complicated. Often the river floods and all life is swamped with water. Our animals drown, our crops are destroyed and we need to start all over again. It’s difficult to know what to do to cope with the situation.
"We are taking the biggest hit, as they say, because we do not have the resources to defend ourselves and wealthy governments are not helping to stop the contamination of our environment. Nobody seems to remember that poor countries such as ours remain vulnerable and are the ones that are going to suffer the impact of their actions.”
This year is the moment for urgent action, as world leaders will meet in Copenhagen in December to decide our global response to the chaos already being caused by climate change, and how to prevent it getting worse. Leaders must reach an agreement on mitigating (cutting down the emissions that cause climate change) and adapting (providing support for people living in developing countries to adapt to climate change) to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which runs out in 2012. Join our call for a just agreement.

Many thanks to the thousands of you who have sent postcards and emails calling on the Department for International Development to scale up its support to survivors of sexual violence in the DRC. We have had a response from the department and are following up with a series of meetings with key department members. We will keep you updated on developments. In the meantime, please keep promoting this vital campaign to friends so we can keep up the pressure.
