Zambia is rich in natural resources. So why do two-thirds of Zambians still live in extreme poverty?
Last year, 3,000 of you sent postcards and emails to Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the treasury and MP for Inverness, calling for better laws to regulate the actions of UK companies operating in overseas.
Together with the Publish What You Pay coalition, you helped move closer to ensuring that countries rich in natural resources are able to benefit from the revenue instead of watching it disappear into foreign companies’ coffers.
First came an announcement from Prime Minister David Cameron in support of this legislation. Now the European Parliament will debate it early next year. Thank you for help! We’ll keep you updated on further actions you can take in the run up to the European Parliament debate to help ensure the legislation gets passed.
In the meantime, check out this interview with Zambian tax justice campaign Geoffrey below and find out what a difference this legislation could make to the people of Zambia.
