How to make a will

It's easy to put off making a will, but if you die without one your belongings may be distributed according to the law rather than your wishes. It could take considerable time for your family and friends to access your funds and when they do, there can be confusion over who should receive what.

Making a will is straight forward and puts you in control over what happens to your money and belongings. SCIAF will be happy to discuss the practical steps you need to consider when making, changing or updating a will.

For more information and advice please contact Ann Ward on 0141 354 5555. Although Ann is not a legal advisor she will be able to:

  • explain how legacies help our work and some of the projects your gift might benefit
  • explain the various types of legacy available and their benefits
  • help you find a solicitor
  • talk through the practical steps involved in making or changing a will
  • advise executors on how to deal with gifts left to SCIAF

If you decide to make your will during the month of Novemeber, you can participate in the nationwide Will Aid campaign. Throughout this

period you can write your will with a participating Will Aid solicitor free of charge. In return for their time and legal expertise, solicitors ask that you make a donation to support a group of named UK charities, which includes SCIAF.

In 2010, SCIAF raised over £50,000 from people using the Will Aid scheme to make and amend their wills. These donations are used by SCIAF to fund our programmes across the globe, helping people affected by hunger, conflict and disease.
