Training for farmers in Burundi

Thanks to a legacy left to SCIAF, young people in Burundi are being taught how to get the most from their land so that they can provide for their families (Photo: Sean Sprague)

One legacy received in 2008 was enough to provide training in sustainable agriculture for 60 young people from some of the poorest families in the Gitega province of Burundi.

Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world, with more than 68% of the population living below the poverty line.

Years of ethnic conflict has killed many thousands of people. After Rwanda, Burundi is the second most densely populated country in Africa, and the scarcity of arable land has been the source of much of this conflict.

Many of the young people SCIAF is supporting were orphaned during the conflict or are returning refugees. These young people rely completely on the land for survival. SCIAF is training them in horticulture, fruit production, forestry, composting and raising animals. After they have completed their training they receive a starter kit and receive support and mentoring from staff and other students.

One legacy was enough to support 60 young people. They will now be able to grow more food, earn an income and build a better future.

We are incredibly grateful for this and every legacy we receive – no matter what size, legacies enable SCIAF to save and change lives.
