SCIAF Brings Global Citizenship to UK Classrooms

SCIAF's new schools resources catalogue

Children around the UK are being given the chance to learn more about young people from Africa, Asia and Latin America, thanks to a host of exciting new school resources launched by SCIAF.

The Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund aims to bring international development to the classroom with the launch of a colourful new schools catalogue, packed with ideas on how young people can make a difference to communities living in poverty around the world. The booklet has been posted to every primary and secondary school in Scotland and to Catholic schools across the UK.

SCIAF Schools Education Officer, John Sharp said:

“Global citizenship can transform our world and play an important part in ending poverty, injustice and inequality. One of SCIAF’s great strengths is our experience of working in international development over many years and the amazing stories and images we bring back from the countries we work in. Creating global awareness of development issues in schools is very important as it helps young people to better understand the beliefs and cultures of other people and to develop a greater understanding of our world.”

The new catalogue features a wide range of teaching aids, including the Sharing Our World pack for primary schools which contains posters, case studies and an interactive DVD. Other items on offer include a Fairtrade action guide and an innovative new modern languages resource for secondary schools featuring interviews with French-speaking teenagers in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are also loads of great fundraising tips and information about how to arrange a visit from one of SCIAF’s dedicated schools officers.

All SCIAF’s schools resources aim to promote global citizenship and bring children here in the UK closer to communities around the world.

John added:

“Reaching out to schools is one of the best ways for SCIAF to get young people involved in global issues and teach them that they have the power to make a positive difference. SCIAF has built up a wealth of excellent schools resources and the new catalogue is a great opportunity for us to let teachers know what we have to offer.”

The new catalogue also features information on SCIAF’s new youth website (www.sciafyouth.org.uk) which is crammed with inspirational videos, photographs, teaching aids, downloadable resources and an online music store featuring songs recorded by schoolchildren. Global Citizenship Posters, available in English and Gaelic, are also available and will add a touch of colour to any classroom and make a great starting point for lessons.
