For many millions of Colombians, life is desperate. Despite a wealth of oil, coal and precious metals, poverty is endemic across much of the country. Inequality, violence and exploitation are part and parcel of everyday life. For nearly 50 years, an armed conflict has raged between left-wing insurgents, the Colombian army and right-wing paramilitaries. The cocaine trade helps to fuel this violence, making Colombia one of the deadliest places on earth.
