For the last few decades, Haiti has been classed as the only country in the Western hemisphere that is characterised by ‘extreme human suffering’. This is especially true in the sun-baked arid landscape of the Central plateau where Mombim Crochu is situated.
Few people here have sufficient land and, as a result hunger is commonplace. The people of the Central Plateau have a fragile grip on basic survival. Adults die young here, most never reaching 50. Many succumb to tuberculosis and AIDS. Children are prone to diseases like measles, malaria and dysentery which are easily preventable but often fatal for the malnourished.
In the evening, I meet the team delivering the project in Mombim and we make plans for our visits to the communities the next day.
