Art Lessons

This Wednesday we set the kids the challenge of designing a logo for the summer school, which we hope to either print onto stickers or make into a rubber stamp for the certificates they'll receive at the end of the programme. They came up with some very beautiful and thoughtful images. Some were based around the activities on offer at the school, like football. Some had a religious theme, others incorporated traditional Ethiopian designs and some were quite abstract.

One pupil drew a burning torch because fire is bright and clever just like the students. The students will now vote to decide which logo will be used.

The classes in government schools here are very large – one teacher lecturing to classes of 60 or more – so, unsurprisingly, the children aren’t used to creative lessons like these. It was completely new to them and, although it took them a while to get into the swing of things, they seemed to enjoy themselves. I am learning so much too and am now aiming to encourage lots of creativity and imagination in my classes. Hopefully we'll be able to produce some artists and writers by the end of the program!
