Monsignor Hector Fabio, Colombia
In 2003, Briton Mark Henderson was taken hostage in Colombia by local militia. As the media reported this event, Monsignor Hector Fabio was working behind the scenes to help secure Mark's safe release. On being freed, Mark thanked the Monsignor for his support. This case is only one example of Monsignor Fabio's important peace building work.
Betty Gahima, Benishyaka Association, Rwanda
In 1994 the Rwandan genocide shocked the world. In 100 days, about 800,000 people were murdered as ethnic tensions exploded into violence. Betty Gahima is a teacher who decided to respond to the tragedy. She founded the Benishyaka Association in 1994 to help orphans, widows and families affected by the genocide. She is the National Co-ordinator.
Beatrice Lubega - AIDS Widows Orphan Family Support (AWOFS) Uganda
Scot Fr Stephen Collins (M.Afr) established AWOFS whilst working in Uganda. Beatrice worked with him for a number of years and became Director when he retired. She ensures the legacy of his work continues and develops.
Sister Jember, Integrated Holistic Approach Urban Development Project (IHA-UDP) Ethiopia
Sister Jember established the Integrated Holistic Approach Urban Development Project (IHA-UDP) in 1989 after a long and varied career in healthcare which included working with the Red Cross and Save the Children. A relative of Haille Selassie, she was a political prisoner from 1976 to 1981 but continued her work by training health assistants in prison, delivering children and responding to emergencies.
Ray Kancherla - Caritas India, India
In December 2004, the Asian Tsunami dominated the headlines. As Senior Manager in Public Relations and Communication Services at Caritas India, Ray was responsible for visiting the affected areas, assessing needs and ensuring information was made available to the media and to the Caritas network of which SCIAF is a member.
Ms Mirunalini - Centre for Development and Women's Studies (CDaWS) India
Ms Mirunalini started CDaWS in 1989. A qualified lawyer she had always been interested in women's rights and wanted to establish an organisation that would use the law to assist women in distress.
Scotland's Catholic Bishops have condemned the violence of poverty in a pastoral letter, marking SCIAF's 40th anniversary. SCIAF is the official aid agency of the Catholic Church in Scotland. The Bishops used the opportunity of its anniversary to explore the link between peace and justice and to suggest practical steps to make poverty history and create a stable and secure world.

SCIAF Celebrates 40 Years of Changing Lives

Leading Scottish aid agency, SCIAF, ended its 40th anniversary year in Edinburgh on Saturday, 11th February with a celebration of the lives it has changed.
There were six speakers at the SCIAF 40th Anniversary Supporters Day.
