Celebrating Oscar Romero

Thirty years ago, Archbishop Oscar Romero was shot dead while saying mass in San Salvador. To celebrate the life and work of one of El Salvador’s most inspirational figures, we have launched an exciting new schools’ resource designed to bring his legacy to life in Scottish classrooms.

Ciudadanos del Mundo (Citizens of the World) is a free, online resource for RE and Modern Languages. It explores the teachings of Archbishop Romero, who was a true global citizen, and the impact his life continues to have on people in El Salvador and around the world.

Romero’s outspoken criticism of the right wing Salvadoran government and its brutal treatment of its people lead to his murder on 24th March 1980. The Archbishop was a real champion of the poor and oppressed, and SCIAF has taken great inspiration and motivation in our work from the example he set.

Our innovative new resource features a video wall of short films about Romero’s life, the work of one of SCIAF’s partners in El Salvador and interviews with Salvadoran teenagers. It has been designed to help young people in Scotland learn Spanish in a fun, interactive way, whilst discovering more about Oscar Romero, global citizenship, life in El Salvador and the work of SCIAF.

John Sharp, SCIAF’s Schools Officer, said: “Young people are fascinated about the world around them and the lives of young people in other countries. By providing materials based on real people and real issues, we want to encourage students to find out more about the amazing life and legacy of Oscar Romero whilst also learning Spanish. This new resource also provides RE and Modern Language teachers with all the materials they need to embed global citizenship themes into the classroom.”

Oscar Romero lives on in the hearts and minds of the Salvadoran people and communities around the world. Click here to visit our new online resource.
