Haiti: Hospitals of Hope

When the earthquake struck, six-year-old Sara was trapped for hours under a pile of rubble that used to be her house.

Her leg was broken in several places but thanks to you, she is now on the mend.

SCIAF is working with Caritas – a global network of aid agencies – to make sure that the many thousands of people who have been hurt are getting medical care.

Since January, your donations have helped to provide first aid or medical care to over a million people in Haiti.

Over 70% of the St Francois de Sales hospital was destroyed by the earthquake on January 12th. Just two days later, Caritas had it up and running again.

Nurses and doctors from around the city started examining people in the hospital courtyard and a team of volunteers began cleaning up parts of the building that had not collapsed.

Rescue workers dug into the rubble of the hospital to access the medical supply room and a fridge was pulled from the debris and cleaned up to be used for blood storage.

Three operating theatres have now been repaired, equipped with medical supplies and are in use round the clock while six mobile clinics are caring for thousands of injured across the city.

"We figured if people survived the apocalypse of the earthquake then they should not die because of lack of care,” said Dr Jude Banatte, “and that's what we are doing here, giving them the best care possible."

It will take a long time for the scars left by this terrible tragedy to heal - but thanks to you, people are slowly beginning to recover.
