Haiti: Providing Food

Thanks to you, Samantha gets a hot meal every day (Photo: Caritas/ Mathilde Magnier)

Thanks to you, five-year-old Samantha will have something to eat today.

Since the earthquake, your donations have helped to provide over 1.5 million people in Haiti with regualr food rations or hot meals.

We are working with Caritas Internationalis - a gloabl network of Catholic aid agencies - to get help to communities that have been affected.

The Sainte Marie community in Port-au-Prince is one of the places where Caritas has been giving out hot meals for children. Today it’s rice, beans and meat.

“I like the food. I like it when it’s hot,” Samantha told us.

Your donations are providing:

  • Food packages which include rice, beans, sardines, milk and juice
  • Clean, safe drinking water
  • Fuel, cooking oil and cooking equipment
  • Hot meals for children

“Until two weeks ago, I didn’t used to eat regular meals,” said 14-year-old Geraldine. “Now food distributions have started in the community, my parents are reassured because they know I’ll eat at least once a day.”

Twins Sandra and Samantha added: “For our parents it’s very hard to get by. They can’t work so they don’t have any money. Sometimes they eat, sometimes they don’t.”

Over 5,000 people have taken refuge in the Sainte Marie community in search of food and shelter. Working alongside the World Food Programme, Caritas is preparing daily hot meals for the 800 children in the camp.

It will take many months and years for Haiti to recover from this disaster. As well as providing emergency supplies of food, shelter and medical care, we are giving people in Haiti the long-term support they need to rebuild their lives and get back on their feet.
