| Actor John Michie, otherwise known as DI Robbie Ross in Taggart, has called on Scotland’s political parties to commit to fully implement Scotland’s world-leading climate change Act. |
Mr Michie also urged members of the public to forensically investigate what climate action each party is committed to.
The call came in a video ahead of an online debate with the political parties in April which was organised by the Stop Climate Chaos coalition.
The debate was the culmination of a special Climate Day ahead of the Holyrood election on 5th May during which each party made public announcements on how they will tackle climate change and implement the Climate Change (Scotland) Act which was unanimously voted through the Scottish Parliament.
In the specially recorded short film John Michie, who was born in Burma and raised in Kenya, said:
John Michie calls for urgent action on climate change (photos: Simon Murphy).
“Climate change is already hitting some of the poorest people in the world hard, yet these communities have contributed least to the problem. Unpredictable and increasingly extreme weather patterns mean that farmers in developing countries aren’t sure when to plant their crops any more. More frequent and severe storms, floods and droughts in developing countries are destroying crops, people’s homes and their livelihoods, deepening extreme poverty at a time when the world should be working to eradicate it.
“Scotland should be proud that it has the strongest climate change legislation in the world but in the run up to the Scottish elections in May, it’s vital that we get commitments from all the political parties that they will implement the Scottish climate change act. We need to make sure the next parliament actually delivers a low-carbon, green future for Scotland.
“We all have a responsibility to take action, and in this age of modern communications it’s easier than ever to make a difference. So turn on and tune in to the Climate Change Debate and play your part.”
