The drought is affecting many young people (Photo: SCIAF)
Four districts of Borena are receiving support in working through the impacts of the drought. These are Dire, Dillo, Miyo and Moyale. In addition, further humanitarian projects in the Teltele and Yabello districts of Borena are focusing on responding to those affected by the drought.
The drought has been the worst in around 60 years and 10 million people across the Horn and East of Africa have been impacted with those in Ethiopia amongst the worst hit.
Over 10,000 households are receiving support including the following:
The main aim of these projects is enabling vulnerable, but hard working people to protect their livelihoods, provide greater food security and build up their resilience to potential future crises.
Guyo Arsano became a herder to take care of his family (Photo: SCIAF)
Guyo Arsano
People like Guyo Arsano are benefiting from the programmes supported by our Joint Ethiopia Programme. Guyo (23) is from Kadim, a village in Dillo district.
After his father passed away, he became responsible for taking care of his family. The impact of droughts has made this an increasingly difficult task.
"We lost 50 cattle and 41 calves because of drought this year. I left my village taking 90 cattle four months ago. I remember being on the road for nine months because of drought. This time I will be gone for a long time too.
"There is no sign of rain and we are not returning to our village unless it rains. I wanted to go to school so badly, but my father decided I should herd cattle. I am sending my two brothers to school. I want them to be whatever they want to be."
You can help those affected by the escalating drought crisis in the Horn and East of Africa by donating to our emergency appeal now or by calling 0141 354 5555.
