European Commission encourages firms to publish what they pay

SCIAF can share great news from the European Commission

Following campaigning from SCIAF supporters and the global Publish What You Pay coalition, the European Commission has bowed to pressure for legislation that would ensure European oil, mining and gas companies operating overseas would have to reveal what they are paying to developing countries for their natural resources.

Thousands of SCIAF supporters backed the call this summer, and now the momentum is building for effective rules to ensure our corporations are paying their fair share back to developing countries.

This money could be invested in infrastructure, healthcare and education.

David Cameron has already spoken out in support of tax justice earlier this year in a speech in Lagos, Nigeria. These changes would provide a great benefits to many developing nations, putting them in greater control of what they gain from their valuable natural resources.

The Commissions proposals will go before European heads of state early next year. Look out for action alerts from SCIAF for more opportunities to take action. This could ensure the law which could benefit people in more than 50 developing countries worldwide becomes a reality.

Thank you for all your support on this vital issue. You can still take action to ask the UK Government to champion concrete action in this area if you haven't already done so.
