SCIAF Photo Friday - COCOMOPOCA

The historic moment when the title deeds were handed over (Photo: SCIAF)

During 2011 following a 12 year struggle, COCOMOPOCA was granted legal rights to the ancestral land they have occupied for over 150 years

The official recognition for the land rights of the Afro-Colombian community in Chocó has been welcomed by many supporters and lauded as a historic moment.

There are more than 2,250 Afro-Colombian families living in the riverside communities of Lloró, Bagadó, Certegui and Yuto, near the city of Quibdó, in the Chocó department of Colombia.

Mark Camburn, SCIAF Programme Officer for Latin America recently visited the region:

Despite this historic step forward there are still issues with illegal gold mining and trafficking in the region, with a lack of government infrastructure on the ground preventing eradication of many problems. SCIAF has supported the work of COCOMOPOCA for four years and is calling for full engagement of the community in developing for the future.
