The unusual Zambian frost has had a severe impact on the farmers of the country
In Siakasipa, many of the villagers told us they were experiencing changes in the climate like the unusual frost and changes in the rain patterns.
The community have set up small gardens (like allotments) where everyone grows their fruits and vegetables. They use special techniques in planting their seeds in order to preserve the precious moisture. However, a lot of the soft fruits, like tomatoes and mangos, didn’t survive the dry season.
The photo gallery below shows just how dry the land is:
Liandama is a small scale farmer. This year he was affected by frost - which is highly unusual in this part of Africa. The photos above depict the utter devastation of banana and mango crops.
Liandama told SCIAF:
"This year I got frost on my mango trees. They are completely dead. Usually I’d be able to harvest again in December but not this time as the frost has completely killed them."
