SCIAF Photo Friday - Moses Mulenga

After a short break Photo Friday is back and this week we are meeting Moses in Zambia

Moses Mulenga is a farmer and lives in Chinkuli, Zambia. He has received training from Kassisi Agricultural Training College to help him adapt to the harsh impact of climate change. He told us that he struggled to grow anything until he received training from KATC.

Moses can now grow avocados, tomatoes, citrus fruits, maize, sorghum, soya beans and ground nuts. He uses clever techniques to plant in different ways to maximise the moisture in the soil, he knows how to turn his animal waste into fertiliser, and plants special grasses that act as natural pesticide.

Check out our gallery to see Moses hard at work:

“When droughts came, seeds would die and farmers would have to plant again. When floods came, the fertile topsoil was washed away. But not every farmer has enough seeds to replant, that’s the problem. It results in hunger.”

Moses now makes it his mission to train as many farmers as possible in the techniques that he has learned. Together with his neighbour, Watson, they train other farmers in the district.

“I am now a happy farmer. The drought this year affected us, my maize yield was low, but still I have soya beans, ground nuts and sorghum. I can have enough left over to sell, and can make profits, so I can use the money for school fees or for my health.”

You might recognise Moses if you have seen the latest issue of the review or our action on climate change. Why not take our quick and easy action just now and help people like Moses combat climate change? Thank you
