SCIAF Photo Friday focuses on Siakasipa residents Vainess and Alicie in Zambia this week
Vainess is the head of her household, looking after four children and two grandchildren. She received training in sustainable agriculture, to help her improve her harvests even when the rainy season is unpredictable.
Using the techniques she learned, she now trains other farmers in the community. She has plans to set up her own community organisation to help more farmers share knowledge, improve their yields and make a profit to pay for essentials like health care and school fees.
In Siakasipa, unusual frosts have ruined crops and farmer's livelihoods. The landscape is dry and arid leaving the chances of recovery from the shock of frost very slim. Meet Vainess below:
Alicie’s husband has passed away, and she now looks after her children by herself. Her paw-paw tree managed to survive the frost, so when they are ripe she and her children will be able to eat them.
Usually she grows enough to feed her family and sells the surplus to pay for the children’s school fees. But this year because of the drought she only harvested very little. It is enough for them to eat, but she doesn’t know how she’ll be able to send the children to school. She says it’s not enough to send the children to school. See Alicie's life in pictures:
