Scottish Stars Support the WEE BOX BIG Change Campaign

Global singing sensation Susan Boyle joined a host of Scottish stars from the worlds of sport, business and television to support SCIAF's WEE BOX, BIG Change Lent campaign.

Susan pledged to give up her favourite treats of chocolates and sweets for the 40 days on Lent and is joining other famous faces including Michelle Mone, Ally McCoist, Eddi Reader, Darren Fletcher, Kaye Adams, The Proclaimers, Sally Magnusson and Harry Potter actress Katie Leung.

The WEE BOX, BIG Change campaign runs to 21st April and helps SCIAF to provide long term practical support to people in some of the poorest countries in the world including Haiti, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The famous Scots are being joined by hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life who give up a favourite treat such as coffee, cakes, wine or chocolate for the 40 days of Lent, put the money they save in a SCIAF WEE BOX, and then donate the proceeds to SCIAF at Easter.

Susan Boyle attended the media launch of the campaign at SCIAF’s office in Glasgow on Ash Wednesday (9th March) where she was welcomed by staff, young supporters and volunteers.

Speaking at the launch Susan said:

“SCIAF has always been close to my heart because my parents were big supporters and we always had a WEE BOX in our house during Lent. It’s a fantastic organisation that works in some of the poorest countries in the world, providing real hope and practical help to people affected by extreme poverty or the trauma of war or natural disasters.

“I’m giving up sweets and chocolate for SCIAF this Lent. I know every penny they get will be used in practical ways to help poor people support themselves in the long term so they can fulfil their own dreams of a future with respect and human dignity.”

SCIAF Chief Executive Paul Chitnis said he was deeply grateful for the high profile support the campaign is receiving and that it will make a huge difference to the people SCIAF works with in poor countries.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Susan and so many other high profile Scots are taking part in this year’s campaign. I’ve no doubt their public support will encourage many more people across Scotland to find out about the campaign and join in. By making a small change in our own lives such as giving up chocolate or wine for Lent and donating the money to SCIAF, you can really make a big difference to people in poverty overseas.”

The money raised in the campaign will help fund SCIAF’s long term development work in 16 countries which includes: providing seeds, tools and livestock for poor farmers; skills training and small loans to help people generate an income; and healthcare and trauma counselling to those affected by war.

Each year the campaign highlights a specific area of SCIAF’s work. The focus this year is on the emergency aid and long term development work that SCIAF is providing in Haiti.

Members of the public who would like to join the campaign and get their own free WEE BOX are invited to contact SCIAF on 0141 354 5555 or order one online at www.theweebox.org.
