Agakura Youth Agricultural Project

The Agakura Youth Agricultural Project near Gitega in central Burundi has benefited from £42,000 funding from SCIAF in Janurary this year to increase rural household food production by working with unemployed young people.
The project provides equipment and training in agriculture, agro-forestry, and animal husbandry, using organic approaches to farming, to teach young farmers how to increase the output of their smallholdings in an appropriate and sustainable way.
It is hoped that an increase in productivity will reduce the potential for conflict over land by guaranteeing local food security.
