The referendum follows the signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005 with the northern government in Khartoum after a major civil war killed over 1.5 million people.
Many contentious issues such as disputed border areas and oil revenue are still to be resolved. SCIAF and its partners are concerned that underlying tensions could lead to a renewal of violence.
The outcome of the referendum is due to be announced in early February.
SCIAF is working with partners in Sudan to prepare for a possible emergency situation if conflict breaks out. We are also helping to promote peace through Radio Bakhita, a station which is run by the Catholic Church and which broadcasts messages of peace and encourages non-violent conflict resolution.
The Church in Sudan has asked people around the world to pray for peace in their country. SCIAF has produced prayer cards which have been distributed to parishes across Scotland so that churches may have the opportunity to incorporate the prayer into their Masses.

Paul Chitnis, SCIAF’s Chief Executive, has written to Scotland’s parish priests. He said:
“I returned recently from Southern Sudan, a region which, because of conflict over two decades, has witnessed 1.5 million deaths and many millions of refugees. SCIAF continued to work with local partners throughout the conflict and now, more than ever, the people need our prayers for the future. It would be wonderful if parishioners could join in this act of solidarity and faith."
Anyone who has not already received a prayer card through their parish and would like to, or would like more information on SCIAF’s work in Sudan, please call 0141 354 5555.
