Mundri Relief and Development Association

In Sudan, traditionally attitudes toward women and patriarchal cultural practices have led to a prevalence of gender related abuses, including wife beating, forced marriages, widow disinheritance and rape.

Mundri Relief and Development Association (MRDA) has received assistance from SCIAF for its Gender Empowerment Programme. This programme addresses the issues that inhibit women’s participation in development and increases women’s awareness of their legal and civic rights.

Through workshops, public campaigns and by working with courts, MRDA has engaged hundreds of women to become more aware of their basic rights and so better placed to prevent their violation. The ultimate aim of the project is to gradually change community opinion in relation to women’s right and gender based violence and to sensitise the courts to gender related abuses.
