There is now hope. That is the story of many people you help through supporting SCIAF. Meet Jenneth - the face of SCIAF’s Lent campaign 2008. At 14 Jenneth was kidnapped from her home in northern Uganda and forced to become a child soldier, innocently caught up in a conflict she only ever wished to escape. For five years Jenneth survived the savage regime of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) living in fear of her life constantly. At 21 Jenneth was able to flee the bush and start a new life.
Rescued by a priest who had bravely entered LRA territory, Jenneth was taken to a centre for practical skills training, funded by SCIAF. Along with other girls who had been abducted, she was given the chance to learn how to support herself and provide for her two children. Robbed of a proper education she chose to take a three year course in tailoring. She was provided with a refuge and the chance to reintegrate into her community after years of living in the wilderness.
Jenneth now looks forward to a brighter future for herself, Wulter and Gurfre, her young boys. With your support SCIAF can support skills training centres around the world to help Jenneth and thousands like her live with hope. By taking small steps to help SCIAF this Lent you will be helping others take the first steps on a journey of hope.
In whatever way you can, please make a commitment to help SCIAF change lives around the world. Whether it is providing livelihood training in tailoring or fish farming, practical support like pots, pans, and clothing for child-headed households affected by conflict, education for young people to give them hope of a self-sustainable future, peace and reconciliation programmes to reunite conflict ridden communities, or empowering voiceless minority groups in countries dominated by self-serving business and government interests, you can make all the difference.
SCIAF’s Lent 2008 campaign has something to help everyone do their bit.
Fill up your WEE Box - your small change can have a big impact. It only costs £30 to send children like Wulter and Gurfre to nursery in northern Uganda. Pass on WEE BOXES to your family and friends and tell them the real difference they can make.
SCIAF’s 40 Ways and 40 Days guide gives you day by day ideas for getting involved throughout Lent, whether it’s finding out more about trade or climate change, reflecting on the importance of peace in the world or putting on a karaoke night and charging 50p every time someone picks an 80s song – the choice is yours!
There’s a wealth of education material for schools to make sure the whole family can get involved and follow the journey of how a small donation to SCIAF in Scotland makes its way around the world to make a big difference to someone in need. Your first steps can set someone like Jenneth, Wulter, and Gurfre on a journey of hope, changing their lives for the better.
What are you doing this Lent?
