The Global Food Crisis has hit poor countries around the world. As food prices escalate, getting enough to eat has become a straightforward impossibility for many people in Haiti. In April 2008, violent protests linked to food insecurity erupted across the country.

Malnutrition and starvation are widespread and the poorest people are not equipped to survive the ongoing nature of the crisis without immediate support.

Vital resources provided

SCIAF is working alongside Caritas Haiti and has already sent £100,000 in emergency funding to help 20,700 households increase their food supply. The money has bought tools, subsidised seeds for families and training to improve agricultural production.

The emergency funds will also pay for irrigation channels to be cleared so crops can be watered regularly, soil conversion, and sanitation facilities. The project will support nine dioceses to prepare emergency action plans in case of future food shortages.
