COMUS

Man in nursery - Organic agriculture provides livelihoods

SCIAF works with COMUS to support small-scale farmers to increase their production of organic products, obtain the necessary certification, and gain access to international markets.

The organisation trains coffee producers who, as a result, are eligible for the ‘Certification for Organic Coffee’, which increases their earnings per sack of coffee sold. The organisation is one of the few co-operatives operating at a local level, exporting organic products, and buying directly from the growers.

As well as coffee production COMUS also markets sorghum (animal feed), sesame seeds, oregano, lemongrass, soaps, shampoos and natural medicines.

COMUS also provides training and loans to women so they can establish small businesses and earn an income. Another important part of COMUS’s work is the promotion of gender equity and advocacy on access to health services.
