Caritas staff are helping communities in Java to recover from the recent tsunami which cost over 500 their lives and prompted over 40,000 to flee their homes. Many fishing boats were damaged or lost.

The network, of which SCIAF is a member, has already distributed food and blankets to those sheltering in Buntu, a montaineous area of rubber plantations. About 2000 people who fled their homes are now sleeping in temporary camps in the plantation's mosque, school, stores, and office. In the next few days they will also target the hilly Ayah beach area. It is hoped that most will be able to return home in the next week once the fear of a tsunami recurring has subsided.

Caritas staff have also distributed food to 200 people who sought refuge in Kroya. Children, pregnant women and the elderly are the most vulnerable and have been provided with tents as some protection against the cold nights.

After shocks have contributed to the fears of those who fled, however, Caritas will be working with them over the coming months to rebuild their lives and communities.
