On the 8th of October 2005 a major earthquake devastated huge parts of northern Pakistan and India. Over 3.5 million people were affected by the disaster, which claimed over 75,000 lives. Hundreds of thousands of homes were destroyed alongside the communication, health, education and agricultural infrastructure that held the region together.
The huge quake measured 7.6 on the Richter scale and was felt as far away as Afghanistan and western Bangladesh. The worst damage occurred in the disputed territory of Kashmir and in eastern parts of Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province.
Vital resources provided
Money generously donated to SCIAF’s Pakistan Earthquake appeal has helped to provide assistance to over 15,560 households affected by the earthquake.
The money enables agricultural support, training and inputs to local farmers and small producers to help them recover from the disaster. This creates income generating opportunities for local people and communities alongside repairing and rebuilding the region’s damaged infrastructure.
The destruction of barns, stables, seed storage facilities, and the death of livestock has led to a huge decline in farming. Money provided by SCIAF enabled the distribution of seeds and livestock to hundred of farmers and small producers and provided them with agricultural training and support.
Money raised also helps to create new income generating opportunities for communities, such as training local people in tailoring, embroidery and providing sewing machines to help people start up their own businesses.
Funds have also helped to establish poultry projects in conjunction with local women’s groups.
