Indonesia earthquakes and tsunamis

At least 429 people have died in the latest tsunami to strike Indonesia with the death toll expected to rise.

More than 1400 people have also been injured and many homes have been destroyed as raging waters swept inland from the shores around the Sunda Strait. It is believed the tsunami was triggered by undersea landslides after volcanic erruption of Anak Krakatau.

We are already working with Caritas Indonesia to help survivors of the devastating tsunami which hit Palu on Sulawesi island in September.

The Palu tsunami left more than 1,900 people dead, and almost 50,000 people homeless. The United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported there were nearly 200,000 people in urgent need of assistance, about a quarter of them children.

Responding to disasters of these magnitudes presents huge challenges. Communications are limited, and damaged roads, bridges and airports all make it extremely difficult to get emergency aid to survivors. Further, many hospitals have been damaged or destroyed.

There is an urgent need for temporary shelters, medical supplies, food and clean water. Long term help will be needed to help families rebuild their homes and livelihoods in the months and years ahead.

We're working closely with Caritas Indonesia who have been distributing food, water, and essentials like soap and blankets to families in need in Palu, and we are monitoring the current situation to establish what further emergency support we can provide to the people affected by this latest disaster.

You can help us to provide emergency support to those who need it most by donating to our emergency appeal. United, we can help the people of Indonesia.

Your donation will go straight to helping those affected by the earthquakes and tsunamis.

Our partners Caritas Indonesia are working to assess the situation and find out what support is needed.

Please keep the keep the people of Indonesia in your thoughts and prayers during their hour of need.

Loving Lord, for those who have died, give them eternal rest for those who are bereaved, comfort and console them for those who are hurt, heal and strengthen them. Amen.
