Darister lives in Mundri, South Sudan, with his wife, Mary, and their ten children. Darister’s life is one of unrelenting toil. He has 12 mouths to feed in a country marred by conflict, drought and famine. His small plot of land does not provide enough food, and so he was forced to turn to the river for an income, which barely allows the family to escape starvation.
Darister works with Mary and his children all day, every day, collecting sand from a nearby river to sell to construction companies. It is back-breaking work, and cost Darister his sight from a waterborne disease. Despite this, Darister must continue day after day as he struggles to feed his family.
I have no other option; I have to work for my family or else we will die of hunger. Only God will provide this time. We have nothing to eat.
