School pupils racing to help others at SCIAF 6k Family Fun Run

Kind hearted children from St Serf’s Primary School in Airdrie are getting fit and helping people in need as they prepare for the SCIAF's 6k Family Fun Run.

Around twenty pupils from primary 5, 6 and 7 have been training hard for the event on 4th May in Strathclyde Park. Money raised by the pupils will help our life-changing work in developing countries, enabling families to grow enough to eat, earn an income, live in peace, learn new skills and get emergency aid when disasters strike.

The young people will be putting on their running shoes along with teachers from the school, who have been joining the pupils on their lunchtime training sessions.

The idea to take part came when principal teacher, Catherine Loughran, started a ‘Couch to 5k’ running club for senior pupils in the school.

She decided to sign them up for the SCIAF 6k Family Fun Run to give the club a target to work towards.

Principal teacher, Catherine Loughran said:

What I love about this group is the teamwork they’re showing. We said at the beginning we would all do it together and we haven’t had anybody drop out yet. The more confident runners are encouraging the other children and that’s brilliant to see.

We really are doing it as a team and when I saw the 6k I thought what better way to show how far they’ve come than to sign up for this.

The event is open to walkers and runners of all ages and abilities.

Primary seven pupil Kasey Fagan said the training sessions have been paying off:

When we started running we used to stop really quickly but you just have to keep pushing and not stop. Once you’ve achieved it you feel really good.

Classmate Billie Spittal said:

I’ve been really enjoying it. The best part is that I can now run for longer and I feel quite confident now. It’s nice to be able to do it with all my friends.

The pupils and teachers are asking friends and family to sponsor them to complete the race, with the money raised going to SCIAF.
