SCIAF launches Ukraine Appeal

1 March 2022

Caritas Poland - Ukraine

Help is urgently needed in Ukraine.

We have launched an emergency appeal to support the people of Ukraine.

Within the span of a week, the brutal aggression and large-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia has seen more than 660,000 Ukrainians fleeing to neighbouring countries. Over 100,000 people are thought to be internally displaced because of Russian attacks. These numbers are growing rapidly.

The armed violence is causing widespread human suffering, civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure. People are in desperate need of emergency food, water, shelter, hygiene kits, counselling and child support services.

SCIAF is a member of Caritas Internationalis, the global network of Catholic Relief agencies, which is leading a global response to the conflict.

Caritas Ukraine is supporting people displaced by the conflict within the country, while Caritas Poland, Caritas Moldova and Caritas Romania are supporting refugees who have fled to find safety in neighbouring countries.

Tetiana Stawnychy, President of Caritas Ukraine, said:

“We’re in day 6 of this war and every day brings something new, something different. Today Kharkiv was a target, with civilian infrastructure being hit. Situation continues to be tense with active fighting – it is difficult and volatile.

“This is a huge trauma for all people. I’ve been seeing parents struggling to shepherd their children through this.

“We have 25 centres to help people along the way throughout the country where they can have hot food, shelter, psycho-social support.

“I can’t emphasise enough the solidarity we see of everyone inside this country.”

Your donations will support our sisters and brothers in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries, who urgently need your help in this hour of darkness.

Alistair Dutton, SCIAF’s Chief Executive, said:

“The situation in Ukraine horrifies me. SCIAF stands in friendship and solidarity with the people of the Ukraine, conscious of the fear and anxiety they must currently be feeling, and urges world leaders to pursue all possible avenues to re-establish peace and security.”

The situation in Ukraine reminds us of the injustice and human tragedy of conflict around the world. We must stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. Please pray with the SCIAF family and donate what you can today.
