Scottish MSPs join ‘Relay of Hope’ to shine a light on debt justice
30 May 2025

A group of MSPs from across the political spectrum gathered outside the Scottish Parliament this week to take part in the global Relay of Hope, a symbolic action calling for urgent reform of the international debt system.
Organised by SCIAF as part of the Caritas Internationalis Jubilee 2025 campaign, Scottish MSPs showed their solidarity with countries around the world suffering under the weight of unjust and unsustainable debt.
SCIAF, the global Caritas network, people of faith, campaigners, and political leaders are joining forces to demand a debt system that puts people before profit.
Line Christensen, SCIAF's Advocacy Manager said:
"Today, 3.3 billion people - nearly half the global population - live in countries that spend more on debt repayments than on health or education. A fairer global debt system is both necessary and possible.”
The global debt crisis has deepened dramatically in recent years. Many countries are caught in a cycle of paying debts at the expense of investing in basic services.
The Caritas network’s debt justice campaign calls for urgent action, including a new UN-led global debt framework, legislation to make private creditors participate in relief efforts, and the cancellation of unjust debts. These reforms are not charity, but a matter of justice.
A huge thank you to Scottish parliamentarians for showcasing their commitment to international solidarity at Parliament this week.

SCIAF is calling for unfair global debt to be cancelled as soon as possible.
