On 10th August, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia, the strongest quake the South American country has seen this century.

The government has declared the crisis a national disaster as work continues in earnest to rescue and help as many of the people who have been impacted as possible. Our thoughts and prayers are with the communities and our partners there.

The epicentre has been reported in San José del Palmar in the region of Chocó. SCIAF’s work has focused on Chocó, one of the poorest regions of the country, for many years. It featured in our 2025 WEE BOX Lenten Appeal and already faces so many challenges to meet the basic needs of the people living there. Now, your support is needed more than ever beyond the immediate response of vital search and rescue operations that are underway.

Our Colombia Earthquake Appeal enables us to support our partners through the Caritas network as they provide essentials like food, water, hygiene, shelter, and psychosocial and spiritual support to those most affected. We will continue to work alongside our sisters and brothers in Colombia in this time of great need as they take time to heal and rebuild.

A prayer for the communities in Colombia:

Loving Lord,

We pray for our sisters and brothers in Colombia
amidst the devastation and disruption.

We ask that through the damage and despair, Your light can shine through;
that the response of those working to bring aid can be the hope You promise.

Bring comfort to those who grieve,
bring peace to those who are in fear,
bring strength to those who are responding,
and bring hope to all who are affected.

May our prayers of comfort reach our sisters and brothers
in compassion and peace at this time.

Amen
