Climate Challenge Programme Malawi

The Climate Challenge Programme Malawi (CCPM) is a three year, £3.2 million Scottish Government initiative that will work with communities in Southern Malawi to identify the climate challenges they face, with a particular focus on helping the most vulnerable, including women and girls, and promoting human rights.

The CCPM provides a clear example of climate justice in action.  It recognises people in developing countries are the first to be affected by climate change, and will suffer the most, despite having done little or nothing to cause the problem.

CCPM

Malawi is a country already being hit hard by climate change. Communities, who depend on small-scale farming to provide for themselves, are struggling to know when to plant their crops due to increasingly unpredictable weather, while more frequent and severe floods, storms and drought can destroy their harvests, homes and livelihoods overnight.

Building on the historical links between Scotland and Malawi, and complementing other Scottish Government water management, renewable energy and poverty alleviation programmes, the CCPM will support a group of rural communities to identify and implement their own solutions to adapt and build resilience to the worst impacts of climate change.

SCIAF will administer the CCPM and work with Trócaire Malawi and a wide range of Malawian partners. Activities will revolve around water, food and energy access, with a strong focus on communities learning from each other throughout the duration of the programme.  The programme will benefit the environment, improve climate literacy in Malawi and Scotland - especially in relation to the human rights of vulnerable minorities, and create a sustainable legacy that demonstrates long-term physical, behavioural, and social change in the communities.

In doing so, the CCPM will support the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals by taking direct action to address the impact climate change is having at a local level, promoting gender equality and human rights so the most vulnerable people are not left behind, and reducing poverty through sustainable development.
