Caritas Jerusalem continue lifesaving assistance after ceasefire
23 October 2025
Our colleagues at Caritas Internationalis sent through a statement following the end of the brutal war in Gaza, welcoming the ceasefire but highlighting the need for a surge in aid, support for rehabilitation and reconstruction, and continued efforts to consolidate the peace. Read on for the key points.
"Amid the devastation in Gaza, our Caritas colleagues hold onto hope — hope that one day soon, they can turn their efforts from emergency response to recovery and reconstruction. For now, their focus remains on scaling up critical lifesaving assistance, while also caring for our own Gaza team and their families as they navigate yet another fragile moment between loss and renewal.
"The small Christian community in Gaza continues to endure immense hardship, even in the wake of the ceasefire. In the Holy Family and St. Porphyrius churches, only a handful of families whose homes were spared have managed to return. Most remain sheltered within the church walls, where the sense of faith and solidarity is as vital as the aid they receive.
"Caritas Jerusalem’s work carries on under daunting conditions. Concentrating efforts in Gaza’s southern governorates, the organization operates seven medical points staffed by a dedicated team working tirelessly to reach those most in need. The north remains out of reach — a landscape of destruction with no electricity, no water, and little safety for return.
"Despite the overwhelming humanitarian and economic challenges in both Gaza and the West Bank, Caritas continues its mission with unwavering compassion, professionalism, and faith — standing beside the most vulnerable, bringing help, and keeping hope alive."
SCIAF's Mark Adams said:
"At SCIAF we are humbled by the work of Caritas Jerusalem and by the support we’ve received for them from SCIAF supporters in Scotland. Together we can make a real difference in very difficult times."

As part of the Caritas network of aid agencies, we are able to respond and respond quickly.

SCIAF were amongst the first to start distributing much needed aid, after the official announcement of the end of the war in Gaza.

After two years of brutal bloodshed and suffering, people across the Holy Land are today jubilant at the prospect of peace.
