Reasons to fundraise for charity

26 November 2025

Raising money for charity can make a real difference. At SCIAF, we work with communities around the world and see the good that donations can do every day. Whether you're part of a parish, a school or a local community, here are some reasons to consider raising money for a cause that matters.

1. Help people who are most in need

There are lots of amazing charities that work to help the most vulnerable and at risk people around the world. By giving money to a charity, you help fund vital projects, support individuals and families and build better lives for communities.

At SCIAF, for example, we work directly with people around the world facing poverty, hunger, conflict, inequality or emergency situations. Donations allow us to support these people and get them what they need - both in the short term and long term.

These principles help us reflect on how we treat others and how we use our resources. Even small acts of giving can grow into lasting change when rooted in love.

2. Bring people together

In a world where many people feel isolated, fundraising can bring people together for a shared purpose. You could join a community event, fundraise for your school, raise money with your work colleagues, or come up with a fundraising event to do with your friends or family.

Whether it’s a sponsored run, a bake sale, a non-uniformed day or an eating contest, joining in with others builds a sense of community and connection.

3. Make a lasting impact

Some people worry that their donations won’t make much difference; but every gift matters.

SCIAF has been operating for 60 years, and in that time we’ve seen firsthand the difference that people’s generosity can make. Working in partnership with local organisations, we’ve been able to transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of people through projects like teaching new skills, providing legal support and campaigning for change.

4. Raise awareness as well as money

Fundraising isn’t solely about giving money.

When you fundraise, you often raise awareness, too. You’ll bring attention to your cause, highlight injustices or struggles, or showcase the work of your chosen charity. This spreads understanding, which is the first step toward change.

5. Put faith into action

As a relief and development agency of the Catholic Church, our work is grounded in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching: solidarity, the common good, option for the poor and stewardship of creation.

6. It’s suitable for all ages

Fundraising is something that everyone can do, regardless of age or ability. Not everyone has to run an ultramarathon or swim the English Channel. You can pick pretty much anything!

7. You set an example

It would be easy to focus only on ourselves. To say that problems like poverty and hunger are too big to tackle, so why bother?

But a better world is possible. We can focus on what we can do rather than what we can’t. Fundraising can create a domino effect by inspiring others and encouraging them to do the same.

It’s also a great way for young people to get involved and learn about justice and compassion.

8. Fundraising is fun

Whilst charitable causes often concern serious issues, your fundraising event can be as carefree and fun as you want! Your joy can lift spirits, especially in difficult times.
