Benbecula’s bumper fundraiser for SCIAF

31 March 2026

Big change in Benbecula 2

A church community on Benbecula came together recently for a bumper fundraiser – for people half a world away.

And their message was simple: use your SCIAF WEE BOX to make a BIG CHANGE!

The community came together for a 60-Minute Hymn Challenge, a ceilidh, Highland dancing, and wonderful music performances from young people across the island.

Canon Michael Hutson, Parish Priest at St Mary's Griminish in Benbecula, said:

“It was a fantastic celebration of talent, generosity, and community spirit. Thanks to everyone who took part and supported the WEE BOX: an incredible £1,000+ was raised to help make a BIG CHANGE in the world.”

Lent is 40 days of reflection, fasting, and prayer leading up to Easter. Each year generous Scots up and down the country give up a favourite treat such as coffee, chocolate, wine or crisps during Lent and put the money they save into a SCIAF WEE BOX.

Supporters also hold fundraising events in their schools and parishes and take on personal challenges to raise money. They then donate whatever they raise at Easter to provide a hand-up to vulnerable communities worldwide, struggling to survive due to hunger, poverty, conflict and the climate emergency.

James Cave from SCIAF’s Glasgow office visited the island recently.

He said:

“What an amazing day of fundraising in Benbecula!

“I was blown away by the enthusiasm, energy and determination of the islanders - and by the wind! The weather was cold, but the welcome was so warm - as are the hearts of the communities across these islands!

“Your kindness and energy are making a real difference in some of the poorest parts of the world. Thank you, Benbecula!”

Thanks to the generosity of people across Scotland, SCIAF has been funding local organisations in Ethiopia to bring clean water to communities and help people help themselves out of poverty.
