SCIAF is monitoring the concerning Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo while supporting a range of responses with its long-term partners in the region who have already detected cases in their communities, and is ready to step up that support if and when required.

Recent outbreaks, particularly in the eastern regions of Ituri and North Kivu, have placed enormous pressure on communities already affected by conflict, displacement, and poverty. Cases have now been detected across the border in Uganda.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the current outbreak has spread rapidly, with hundreds of suspected cases and many deaths reported. The situation is worsened by insecurity, weak healthcare systems, and mistrust of health authorities. 45% of health centres in the country are run by the Catholic Church, reaching remote communities. These connections are key to resolving this crisis.

Many communities lack access to clean water, sanitation, and proper healthcare facilities. Health workers are also at high risk, and several have died while treating infected patients. Violence and attacks on treatment centres have further disrupted efforts, forcing some Ebola patients to flee care facilities and increasing the danger of transmission. Traditional burial practices, where families come into close contact with bodies, have also contributed to the spread of the disease.

The response to the outbreak involves the Health Ministry, UN agencies, and humanitarian organisations. Their response includes contact tracing, testing, isolation of patients, safe burial practices, and community education campaigns.

The Caritas family has committed initial emergency funding and is working closely with national and local partners and health authorities to help contain the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable communities. The Caritas network is focused heavily on community engagement, helping local leaders and youth groups spread awareness about Ebola prevention.

SCIAF stands ready to support our local partners in DRC, and a gift to our Emergency Response Fund can ensure relief like this is made available for vital community work when healthcare emergencies arise.
