Textiles event proves a ‘Lotto’ fun

Fabric, fun and friendship were the order of the day as crafty people from across Glasgow and the west came together for a Zambian-Scottish themed textiles event.

The climax of the ‘Celebrating Global Stories and Textiles’ event saw the creation of a giant shared artwork mixing Scottish Tartan and chitenge fabric from Zambia.

Saturday’s event in St Paul’s Church hall, Shettleston was organised by SCIAF, with funding from National Lottery players.

Organiser Elaine McGinlay said:

“It was bigger and better than we could ever have imagined. It was such a lot of fun. There were people there from the local Parish but many others who had never been to a SCIAF event before.

“We are delighted with the final tapestry, which contained designs from everyone there. It really is a truly international collaboration and a celebration of Scottish/ Zambian connections. Many thanks to the National Lottery Awards for All Scotland – their support allowed us to provide a free creche so mums and dads could relax and enjoy the day.”

Celia said:

"I came along today because I'm interested in textiles and the African ones in particular. My godmother always sent me things from Kenya and I have a lifelong wish to go back there. I have loved all the creativity today - it's a wonderful thing."

Louise said:

"I came this morning because I thought it would be a really fun, tactile thing to do with my hands; to be creative for the morning and alleviate some stress."
