Dear [your MP],
I am extremely concerned about the UK government’s plans to merge the Department for International Development (DFID) with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and bring the aid budget under the control of the Foreign Secretary. This announcement comes at the worst possible time when COVID-19 threatens to push 100 million people into extreme poverty.
I strongly believe that for DFID to function effectively and to serve its purpose of reducing poverty and inequality in some of the world’s poorest countries, it must remain an independent department that is represented in Cabinet by its own Secretary of State.
I agree with the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) that this merger would mean that reducing global poverty would no longer be our number one priority and UK aid would be redirected to serve our foreign policy and business interests.
Thank you for your time,
